Last October I decided to start my sabbatical with a 2-week trip to my native Peru, as I hadn't been there for an extended time in almost nine years. Aside from visiting family and friends in Lima, I also wanted to do some tourism. This time, instead of going to the places I have been to in my last stays, mostly in the south, I knew I wanted to go north.

I’ve mentioned in an earlier post that I fell in love with the sea only as an adult, after I lived several years in Mexico. However, only recently I realized our "relationship" is actually much deeper and it goes back to my childhood years, although then it was rather sporadic. In a way, it’s almost as if I had this platonic love affair with the Pacific Ocean for a few consecutive summers but later I found a more stable, lasting love in the Caribbean.

When I was younger I was very afraid of the sea and I think that feeling was very normal as I lived nowhere near it (although, on second thought, the Amazon resembled an ocean in some respects). Our summer vacations with the family in Lima would always include Sunday trips to the beach but I never considered the Pacific Ocean a friend, since to me it was rather intimidating with its darkness, cold temperatures and big waves.
