There is a lot of excitement in the US surrounding Cuba these days. Since President Obama announced at the end of 2014 that he would take several steps to put an end to the embargo with that country, it’s been a recurrent topic in the news and Americans have reportedly been traveling to the island in increasing numbers…everyone wants to go there first! Even Mr. Obama has scheduled a visit next month, making him the second US president to do so in over 80 years.

I’ve mentioned in an earlier post that I fell in love with the sea only as an adult, after I lived several years in Mexico. However, only recently I realized our "relationship" is actually much deeper and it goes back to my childhood years, although then it was rather sporadic. In a way, it’s almost as if I had this platonic love affair with the Pacific Ocean for a few consecutive summers but later I found a more stable, lasting love in the Caribbean.

When I was younger I was very afraid of the sea and I think that feeling was very normal as I lived nowhere near it (although, on second thought, the Amazon resembled an ocean in some respects). Our summer vacations with the family in Lima would always include Sunday trips to the beach but I never considered the Pacific Ocean a friend, since to me it was rather intimidating with its darkness, cold temperatures and big waves.
