I haven’t been fortunate enough to see Peru play in a World Cup as an adult, since the last time our national team made it thus far was Spain 82. That's right, 32 years and 8 World cups, including this one, have gone by. It is very disappointing indeed, but I won’t get into why it has become one of the worst teams in the always competitive, soccer-loving South America. Instead, I’d like to talk about why I enjoy so much following the World Cup, even though by no means I’m an expert in this sport.

A couple of months ago on a Saturday morning, a few friends and I drove from Atlanta, Georgia to Birmingham, Alabama. It was a short but enjoyable trip. We arrived around lunch time so after a bite, our hosting friends took us around to do some sightseeing.

I’ve mentioned in an earlier post that I fell in love with the sea only as an adult, after I lived several years in Mexico. However, only recently I realized our "relationship" is actually much deeper and it goes back to my childhood years, although then it was rather sporadic. In a way, it’s almost as if I had this platonic love affair with the Pacific Ocean for a few consecutive summers but later I found a more stable, lasting love in the Caribbean.

A Mexican colleague was telling me the other day that her parents were about to celebrate their 50th wedding anniversary so she and her siblings were thinking of planning a big celebration, and one of her brothers was even considering a reenactment of the “kidnapping”. As I looked puzzled when she said that, she proceeded to tell me one of the most epic and fascinating love stories I’ve ever heard!

Throughout my life my exposure to other cultures and languages has only brought me positive things, so I just find it hard to believe that people would take diversity as an offense. Quite the opposite, I can imagine how dull our world would be if we all looked the same or we all spoke the same language. Yet, a few weeks ago the Coca-Cola commercial “It’s beautiful” caused such outrage among some individuals in the US that I just had to write about how I feel in regards to this subject. So, here my take…

I have been living away from my family for quite some time now but I have remained very close to them even if I’m not the type of person that calls, texts or writes them all the time. I need my space and I like to live life at my own rhythm, which they respect and understand. Nevertheless, our connection definitely goes way beyond how frequently we communicate with each other and they know that, when needed, I am there for them and vice versa.

After a rather smooth flight from Atlanta into Montego Bay and a quick check at Immigration and Customs we made it to IBEROSTAR Grand Rose Hall, where we were greeted as we made it into the motor lobby by a smiling bell boy, who provided a very much needed wet towel to make the heat more bearable. He escorted us to the Front Desk and, while they were checking us in, my favorite bartender Clive showed up with a welcome drink. He seemed genuinely glad to see me again when I recognized him. It has been nearly 2 years since my last visit, but I want to believe he did remember me!

When I was younger I was very afraid of the sea and I think that feeling was very normal as I lived nowhere near it (although, on second thought, the Amazon resembled an ocean in some respects). Our summer vacations with the family in Lima would always include Sunday trips to the beach but I never considered the Pacific Ocean a friend, since to me it was rather intimidating with its darkness, cold temperatures and big waves.

After wanting to visit Buenos Aires for the longest time I finally made it there in September. I had planned a trip there about 13 years ago that got cancelled at the very last minute…naturally, I had very high expectations but I can say I was not disappointed at all.
